Marc Jacobs – Who is He?
Marc Jacobs (born April 9, 1963 in New York City) is head designer for Marc Jacobs and the diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs. Jacobs is currently the Creative Director of the prestigious French design house Louis Vuitton.
Jacobs, a graduate of the High School of Art and Design in New York City, began his design career at fifteen. Jacobs working as a stock boy at Charivari, an avant-garde clothing boutique in New York City, Jacobs later moved on to the Parsons School of Design in New York City. While at Parsons, Jacobs won the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award and the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award and the Design Student of the Year Award.
Jacobs designed and sold his first line of hand-knit sweaters while at Parsons. Following this, Jacobs started designing for Perry Ellis. Jacobs became well known in the fashion circles when he designed a grunge line up for Perry Ellis. Jacobs teamed with Robert Duffy to form Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc., which continues to this day. In 1986 Jacobs rolled out his first collection with the Marc Jacobs label. In 1987 Jacobs was the youngest designer to have been awarded the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent.
In 1989 Jacobs and Duffy became part of the women’s design unit of Tristan Russo as Vice President and President, respectively. In 1992, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, once again recognized Jacobs design talent with The Women’s Designer of the Year Award. Jacobs is a high flying fixture in the New York City icon scene, having become something of a icon himself. Jacob’s audiences for his fashion shows typically filled with celebrities like Kim Gordon and Vincent Gallo. Most of Jacob’s collections make references to the past fashion decades from the forties to the eighties.
